The standard font, for example Avenir 65 Medium, will be shown in the font menu. All complementary fonts belonging to this standard font, such as Avenir 65 Medium Oblique, Avenir 95 Black and Avenir 95 Black Oblique, are NOT shown in the font menu.

You are correct that this problem can be caused by compatibility issues. To help us identify the cause of this issue, we suggest that you start Word in safe mode and check if the fonts will show up. Safe mode starts Word with a few features disabled and may help us identify the cause of this issue.
It is also possible that this issue is caused by the printer driver being used by Office. Word and PowerPoint routinely check the printer driver to see what it can do and then modifies what it displays based on what it discovers. The technical term for this behavior is device context. This may be the reason why Office is not showing all installed fonts.
We recommend that you make sure that Office isn't using a generic text driver and that a printer driver is installed (even if there is no printer physically connected to your computer). For more information, you may refer to the following link: Fonts are missing from the Font list when you click the Font box on the Formatting toolbar in Word.
If the issue persists, we highly recommend that you contact the font manufacturer or the website from which you purchased or downloaded this font.
Let us know how it goes so we can assist you further.
